Geocaching
Songer Whitewater is always interested in trying new activities that our guests might enjoy. This past season we heard about an exciting trend known as geocaching.
Similar to a traditional treasure hunt, geocachers use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, known as “geocaches” or “caches”. Since the first container was hidden and documented online on May 3, 2000, thousands of caches have been hidden and repeatedly found all across the world. Geocaches are currently located in over 100 countries and on all seven continents, including Antarctica, numbering well over 650,000 in all.
What’s in a Geocache?
Good question… typically geocache’s are located in a waterproof container and will include a logbook and treasure-including toys, trinkets, and interesting items of little value. Seekers of the cache will often take a piece of treasure and leave something different in its place. You will find a good variety of booty located in Songer’s large cache. Remember to bring something interesting for the trade.
How do I find the Songer geocache?
The back half of Songer’s spacious 104-acre base camp is composed of a hardwood forest crisscrossed by logging trails, the disc golf course, and a hiking and biking path. If you’ve got about 45 minutes of time to spare and a GPS unit, you’ve got all the necessary ingredients to finding the cache. Starting on the disc golf or the mountain bike trail, work your way through the forest towards the accurate coordinates. The terrain and level of difficulty is rated as moderately challenging.
