A Family Vacation Whitewater Rafting While Looking for Bald Eagles

Monday, June 7th, 2010

West Virginia is seeing a fast growing population of Bald Eagles.  I just saw one on a recent raft trip in the New River Gorge and it make me want to go and read about the newest addition to the Bald Eagle population.  With a 1,000 ft gorge, home to cliff top after cliff top, it’s the perfect environment for the All-American bird.

There have been almost daily sightings on the Middle New River section where we raft with our family trips.  This is a float section with class 2 whitewater and is perfect for ages 6 and up (making you the coolest parents around when you book it, BTW).

The New River Gorge is 1,000 ft deep with cliff outcroppings along the way.

Binoculars are a must!

The most abundant kind of wildlife you see on a whitewater rafting trip are the birds: swallows dipping in front of the raft and zipping away, the sound of woodpeckers pounding away in the distance, vultures soaring around the top of the gorge, cardinals (the WV state bird), hawks & ospreys looking for the next fish dinner.

I see a field trip in your kids’ future.  What a great “summer-school” activity.

Good luck birding on your trip!

5 Ways to Celebrate West Virginia Day

Friday, May 28th, 2010

We love our West Virginia and it all boils down the fine folks that reside here.  Great hospitality, adventurous spirits and selflessness are what you’ll find in a good West Virginian.

So let’s look at some ways to celebrate this great place and these great folks:

Like this, but with white water rafting.

Like this, but with white water rafting.

#1 You’ve just gotta wear some blue and gold.  It will be mandatory attire for our river trips the weekend of June 19th & 20th! (the 20th is the official WV day).

#2 Hillbilly games in the yard at Songer.

#3 Cookout. Don’t forget the moonshine.  (Kidding!)

#4 Take a tour of the Exhibition Coal Mine in Beckley, WV.  This is a HUGE part of the history of our state.  The tour takes you into a mine shaft and a museum of mine relics.

#5 Come on up where we are and celebrate in the mountains with wide open views and clean air. With your family and with ours.

We have a special place here.  It’s amazing how it revives your soul to be immersed in Mother Nature.  (yeah, I know it sounds cheesey—but you know what I mean).

West Virginia: it does a body good!

The Secret to Going Rafting in West Virginia on Memorial Day

Monday, May 24th, 2010

If you are a secret sharer, are they still secrets?

I don’t know the answer, but there are still some good ones around the New River Gorge.  Like, well, like how you can go white water rafting on the busiest day of the year and have the river to yourself (totally true; put on early or late- you’ll see.)

Sweet!

Sweet!

But what about for Memorial Day?  Let me give you some secrets about whitewater rafting in West Virginia on Memorial Day weekend:

#1: Raft on Friday or Monday. Less crowded and a lot less expensive: Half price Mondays: $47.50

#2: Stick around for lunch on Monday, we always have a cookout on the porch.

#3: It’s a great idea to add in another activity for your Saturday and Sunday. I would suggest a bike ride, horse back ride (don’t you just love the smell of a horse?), or climbing/rapelling on the tippy top of the 1,000 ft New River Gorge.

#4: Songer Olympics on Sunday afternoon: no training required. To put it simply, an obstacle course with teams of four. Rally your friends now!

#5: The Camping Package: we like simple and are sure that you like simple too, especially when it comes to planning logistics for you and your friends.  Package includes: two nights camping, country breakfast buffet, full day raft trip with lunch & BBQ chicken dinner.  We like making it easy for ya.  Use this package as a starting point and then add on any extras individuals might want: cabin, another breakfast, other activities.

#6: Live music at the High Water Lounge Saturday night (on site): 40 lb Snapper.  Get your party on!

So, those are the specials, the extras, the goodies.  But here’s the real secret:

Rafting on Memorial Day is way more fun than a cookout with your cousins.  Sorry, it had to be said

Songer Whitewater: Rafting T’shirt Design Contest

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

One of the thrills building into the beginning of a rafting season is picking out the t’shirt selection for the summer.  We see shirts with artistic swirls of water & rafts, the traditional collared shirts with embroidered logos, and the catchy sayings like: “Paddle Faster, I Hear Banjo Music!”

Our ordering process is traditional, where the vendor comes to the Songer Whitewater Outfitter Store and displays what shirts they have and usually a catalogue of designs that have name drop options.  This leaves us to look at the same designs year after year with only a few new ones.

We have decided to call out to our friends of Songer to help generate a NEW design.  It will be a contest.  The winner will receive two free shirts with their design, rafting package for 2 people & additional “Songer Bucks” to apply to their choice of lodging.

The Fine Print:

Designs need to be posted to www.facebook.com/raftsonger

Winner will be determined by votes through Facebook.

Accepting designs from now until April 28th.

Designs will be on display from May 2nd through May 9th to collect votes.

Winner will be announced on May 10th
