West Virginia Day – The Civil War Connection

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Believe it or not, there are still a few people confused over whether Songer is located in West Virginia or western Virginia.  Once and for all, we are in wild & wonderful West Virginia. And we celebrated it yesterday, June 20th – West Virginia Day.

West Virginia Day is the celebration of our state’s creation in 1863 during the heat of the Civil War.  Coincidentally, the home of America’s best whitewater is also rich in Civil War history.Carnifex Ferry Battlefield Reenactment

  • The Battle of Carnifex Ferry took place on the rim of the Gauley River canyon near Pillow Rock rapid.  (A reenactment takes place every year during the first weekend of Gauley Season.
  • In retreat from their loss at Carnifex Ferry, the Confederate Army ferried across the Gauley River directly above Lost Paddle rapid and marched up the Meadow River corridor.
  • Fayetteville repeatedly changed hands between the North and South, having four battles in town and more than 20 in Fayette County.
  • Fayetteville is recognized as the first site of indirect artillery fire.  After the war only four houses remained standing.

So the next time you are gearing up for Lost Paddle or strolling through Fayetteville, take a moment to check out the landmarks and historic areas nearby.  Carnifex Ferry Battlefield is a good place to start.

5 Ways to Celebrate West Virginia Day

Friday, May 28th, 2010

We love our West Virginia and it all boils down the fine folks that reside here.  Great hospitality, adventurous spirits and selflessness are what you’ll find in a good West Virginian.

So let’s look at some ways to celebrate this great place and these great folks:

Like this, but with white water rafting.

Like this, but with white water rafting.

#1 You’ve just gotta wear some blue and gold.  It will be mandatory attire for our river trips the weekend of June 19th & 20th! (the 20th is the official WV day).

#2 Hillbilly games in the yard at Songer.

#3 Cookout. Don’t forget the moonshine.  (Kidding!)

#4 Take a tour of the Exhibition Coal Mine in Beckley, WV.  This is a HUGE part of the history of our state.  The tour takes you into a mine shaft and a museum of mine relics.

#5 Come on up where we are and celebrate in the mountains with wide open views and clean air. With your family and with ours.

We have a special place here.  It’s amazing how it revives your soul to be immersed in Mother Nature.  (yeah, I know it sounds cheesey—but you know what I mean).

West Virginia: it does a body good!
