New River Gorge Area Attractions
Area Activities Around The New River Gorge
Nature’s Playground
If the New River Gorge is a playground, we’re like the monkey bars. Or the spiral slide. Whatever. There’s a lot of fun stuff to do around here.
New River Gorge National Park
The park is over 70,000 acres and stretches from the historic town of Hinton to the New River Gorge Bridge. Surely you can find something to do there, right?
Fayetteville Shopping
Fayetteville is one of America’s top 10 coolest small towns according to Budget Travel magazine. Walk around downtown and browse arts, crafts, and crafty arts. There’s really cool stuff to be found in Fayetteville.
Hawks Nest State Park
Just down the road and around the bend. Get a good look up and out over the New River from Lover’s Leap overlook.
Summersville Lake
The largest earthen dam east of the Mississippi holds back the waters of the Gauley and creates Summersville lake. Go out to there and play.
Kirkwood Winery and Isaiah Morgan Distillery
We are here to testify that this is the best West Virginia recipe that money can (legally) buy. Free samples after the tour ;-)
Golf
From unique municipal gems to world-renowned classics, the New River Gorge region is a golfers dream. Check out the courses below or ask us about our favorites.
- The Greenbrier Course designed by Jack Nicklaus (The Greenbrier)
- The Meadows (The Greenbrier)
- The Old White Course (The Greenbrier)
- Arnold Palmer Signature Course (Stonewell Resort)
- Nicholas County Memorial Golf Course (City of Summersville)
- Cherry Hill Golf Course (City of Richwood)
- Stonehaven Course (Glade Springs Hotel)
- The Cobb Course (Glade Springs Hotel)
Tamarack
It’s the best of West Virginia. Pretty much anything in the “arts” category is going to be found somewhere in Tamarack. The lunch cafeteria is the best kept secret in West Virginia.
Theatre West Virginia
A summertime tradition around here involves heading to the outdoor amphitheater at Grandview Park and checking out the state’s best stand of Rhododendrons before settling back to take in a show.
Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine
This is a don’t-miss tour. You actually ride in a coal car down into a once working mine (the guides are retired miners). Coolest part: when they turn out the lights.
New River Harley Davidson
We wouldn’t be being honest about what we consider an “attraction” if we didn’t plug the guys down the road at the hog showroom. Please keep the saliva off of the chrome.
The Mystery Hole
Since it’s a mystery, we can only say this about the hole: It’s probably the best $5 you’ll ever spend. Look for the Quonset hut with the gorilla on top of it and a VW Bug sticking out of the side.
